Washer Shaking and Banging in Colorado Springs

Why Your Washer Is Banging
Violent shaking on spin comes from an unbalanced load, a machine that is not level, worn suspension (rods on top-loaders, shock absorbers on front-loaders), or shipping bolts left in after a move.
The first two are free to fix and account for most cases. Test with a balanced load on a level machine before assuming a part has failed.
Grinding or rumbling rather than banging is a different fault — that points at drum bearings, and the economics change completely.
The Causes, Cheapest First
1. Load distribution
Comforters, wet denim and a pile of bath towels bunch to one side and the drum cannot correct for it. Pull everything out, put it back loosely, and run a spin-only cycle. Codes uL or Ofb on Whirlpool and Maytag, UE or UB on Samsung and LG.
2. Levelling feet
Rock the machine corner to corner. Any movement means the feet need adjusting. Most washers have adjustable front feet and self-levelling rears — lift the front slightly and set it down before adjusting so the rears settle. On a garage slab, a slight slope is common and matters more than people think.
3. Shipping bolts still fitted
Front-loaders ship with transit bolts through the back panel that lock the drum for transport. Left in, the machine bangs hard on every spin and will eventually damage the suspension. This is the number one cause we see in a military town — remove them and the problem disappears.
4. Suspension rods or shock absorbers
Top-loaders use four suspension rods that stretch and lose damping over time. Front-loaders use shock absorbers that wear the same way. The machine bounces rather than settling, and it walks. Replaced as a set, never individually.
5. Drum bearings
Grinding, rumbling, or a roar that rises with spin speed. On most machines with a sealed plastic outer tub, replacing bearings costs more than the washer is worth. We will tell you before charging you to find out.
Before You Call
- Redistribute the load and run a spin-only cycle.
- Rock the machine corner to corner and adjust the feet until it does not move.
- Check for shipping bolts at the back if the machine has been moved.
- Look at the floor. A washer on a raised wooden floor amplifies vibration. An anti-vibration mat often solves what looks like a mechanical fault.
- Push the drum up and down by hand. Excessive movement or a clunk points at suspension.
Stop using it if the machine is hitting a wall or cabinet, or if you hear metal grinding. Continued use turns a suspension repair into a bearing replacement.
