Washer Leaking Water in Colorado Springs
Water on the laundry floor has four likely sources. One of them costs nothing to fix and most technicians will not mention it.
Where the Water Is Coming From
A leaking washer nearly always traces to one of four things: a torn door boot seal, a loose or split hose, a drain hose at the wrong height in the standpipe, or over-sudsing from the wrong detergent.
Where the water appears tells you a lot. Front of the machine points at the door seal or the detergent drawer. Back points at supply or drain hose fittings. Underneath, only when running, usually points at the pump or tub seal.
The Four Causes
1. Over-sudsing — check this first, it is free
Regular detergent in a high-efficiency machine creates a foam head that pushes water past the door seal. Owners see water on the floor and assume a part has failed. Switch to HE detergent, use less than the cap suggests, and run two rinse cycles. If the leak stops, you have saved a service call.

2. Door boot seal
Front-loaders have a rubber gasket that tears from underwires, zips, and coins, and grows mould where water sits in the folds. Pull the seal open all the way round and look for splits, especially at the bottom where debris collects.
3. Supply and drain hoses
Fittings loosen with vibration, and rubber hoses develop pinholes from the inside out. Replace fill hoses every five years whether they look worn or not — braided stainless costs very little compared with a floor repair.
4. Drain hose height and siphoning
Pushed too far down the standpipe, the machine siphons and overflows. This is the fault we see most after a machine has been moved.
The expensive one: tub seal
Water underneath only during spin, sometimes with oily marks on clothing, points at a failed tub bearing seal. On machines with a sealed plastic outer tub this usually costs more than the washer is worth. We will tell you that on the phone.
Before You Call
- Stop the machine and unplug it.
- Shut the supply valves behind the washer.
- Note where the water appears — front, back, or underneath — and whether it only leaks during fill, wash, or spin.
- Check your detergent. HE machine with regular detergent is the single most common cause.
- Feel the hose fittings at the back for damp.
- Run a finger round the door seal looking for tears.
Upstairs laundry? Stop using the machine entirely until it is fixed. A slow leak on a second floor causes ceiling damage long before you see a puddle. Common in Briargate, Pine Creek and Northgate.

Common Questions
Why is my washer leaking from the front?
Usually the door boot seal on a front-loader, or over-sudsing pushing water past it. Check your detergent first — regular detergent in an HE machine causes this and costs nothing to fix.
Why is my washer leaking from underneath?
If it only leaks during spin, suspect the drain pump or the tub bearing seal. If it leaks while filling, the inlet valve or a supply hose fitting is more likely.
Can I keep using a leaking washer?
No, especially with upstairs laundry. Shut the supply valves and stop using it. Water damage compounds quickly and costs far more than the repair.
Is a leaking washer worth repairing?
