Washer Not Draining in Colorado Springs

Why Is There Still Water in My Washer?
A washer that will not drain almost always has one of four faults: a clogged drain pump filter, a kinked or blocked drain hose, a failed drain pump, or a drain hose set at the wrong height in the standpipe.
The single most common cause is a coin, hairpin, or small sock that worked past the drum and jammed the pump impeller. It costs nothing to check, and on a front-loader you can reach it in about five minutes.

The Four Causes, In the Order We Check Them
1. Clogged drain pump filter
Front-loaders and most modern top-loaders have a filter that catches debris before it reaches the pump. It sits behind a small access panel at the bottom front. Coins, hairpins, buttons, pet hair, and lint collect there until water can no longer pass.
Most owners have never opened it. If yours has not been cleaned in a year, start here.
2. Kinked or blocked drain hose
The corrugated hose at the back crushes easily when a machine is pushed against a wall, and lint compacts inside it over time. Pull the machine out and run your hand along the hose looking for a flat spot or a hard section.
3. Drain hose at the wrong height
This one causes two opposite problems. Pushed too far down the standpipe and the machine siphons, so it drains continuously and never fills properly. Not high enough and it will not drain at all. The hose should form a loop that sits above the water line in the drum.
This is the fault we see most often after a machine has been moved.
4. Failed drain pump
If the filter is clean, the hose is clear, and you can hear the pump humming without moving water, the impeller is broken or the motor has failed. This is the repair itself rather than a fix you can do.
Less common: pressure sensor or control board
The machine has to know how much water is in the tub before it drains. A failed pressure sensor reports the wrong level and the drain cycle never triggers. If your washer also stops mid-cycle or powers itself on and off, the fault is electrical rather than mechanical.
Drain Error Codes by Brand
A drain code tells you the machine tried to empty and could not within the expected time. It does not tell you which of the four causes is responsible, which is why we test before replacing anything.

How to Drain a Washer That Is Full of Water
You need the water out before anything else can happen. Ten minutes, a shallow tray, and towels.
- Turn the machine off and unplug it. Never work on a washer that is still powered.
- Shut off the hot and cold supply valves behind the machine.
- Find the filter access panel at the bottom front. On most front-loaders it is a small hinged door or a snap-off cover.
- Put a shallow tray and towels underneath. There is more water in there than you expect, and it comes out fast.
- Open the small drain hose first if your model has one, and let it empty into the tray in stages. If there is no hose, unscrew the filter cap slowly.
- Remove the filter and clear it. Rinse it, check the housing for a coin or a sock, and look at the impeller behind it. It should turn freely.
- Refit the filter firmly and run a rinse and spin to test.
Stop and call instead if: you smell burning, the breaker trips, water is on the floor from somewhere other than the filter, or the door is locked shut and will not release once the water is out.

Trail dust, sand, and dog hair
With around 249 sunny days a year, people in this city are outside all year, and so are their dogs. Hiking clothes carry fine grit that settles in the pump housing, and pet hair mats into the filter far faster than lint alone. If you hike, bike, or have a dog that comes along, clean the filter monthly rather than every six months.
After a move
Movers reconnect drain hoses quickly and often at the wrong height. If your washer drained fine at your last duty station and will not now, check the standpipe height before assuming anything failed. Common after a PCS to Fort Carson, Peterson, Schriever, or the Academy.
Frozen pump housing
Washers in unheated garages are exposed to winter lows near 20 degrees. Water left in the pump can freeze and crack the housing, and you find out when it thaws and will not drain. Before the first hard freeze, shut the supply valves, drain the fill hoses, and run a drain and spin to clear the pump.
Not a hard water problem
You may read that mineral buildup blocks drain lines here. Colorado Springs Utilities reports hardness of 1.3 to 2.8 grains per gallon, which the Water Quality Association classifies as soft.
