Quick Answer
If the motor hums but the drum does not turn, the problem is almost always the drive belt, the motor coupling, or the transmission. If the washer fills and agitates normally but stops before spin, it is usually the lid switch or door lock refusing to confirm the door is shut.
On newer top-loaders, a failed shift actuator produces the same symptom. On front-loaders, water still in the tub from a drain fault will also block the spin cycle, because the machine will not spin a full drum.
Why a Washer Will Not Spin
1. Unbalanced load
Start here, because it is free. Comforters, wet denim, and a pile of towels bunch to one side. The machine senses the imbalance and refuses to reach spin speed to protect itself. Redistribute the load and run a spin-only cycle.
Codes: uL or Ofb on Whirlpool and Maytag, UE or UB on Samsung and LG. If those show on a balanced load, the problem is mechanical.
2. Lid switch or door lock failure
This is the most common repair on this symptom. The safety circuit has to confirm the lid is down or the door is locked before the motor is allowed to spin. When the switch fails, the machine fills and agitates perfectly and then simply stops.
We never bypass a lid switch to make a machine run. A washer returned to service without a working safety switch is a hazard to whoever uses it next.
3. Drive belt or motor coupling
A motor that hums or runs while the drum stays still points here. The belt has stretched, snapped, or slipped off the pulley, or the motor coupling between the motor and transmission has worn through. Coupling failure is common on direct-drive top-loaders.
4. Shift actuator
On newer top-loaders, this small electronic part shifts the machine between agitate and spin. When it fails, agitation works and spin does not. It is frequently misdiagnosed as a transmission problem, which is a far more expensive repair.
5. Drain fault leaving water in the tub
A machine will not spin a drum full of water. If yours is sitting full, the fault is drainage, not spin. See washer not draining.
6. Worn drum bearings
Grinding or rumbling during the attempted spin, plus poor spin speed. On most machines with a sealed plastic outer tub this repair costs more than the washer is worth. See when we recommend replacement.
7. Motor control board

What You Can Check Yourself
- Redistribute the load. Pull everything out, put it back loosely, run a spin-only cycle.
- Check the machine is level. Rock it corner to corner. Adjust the feet if it moves.
- Look for standing water. If the drum is full, it is a drain problem, not a spin problem.
- Reset it. Unplug for three minutes, plug back in. This clears the control board memory and fixes some faults after a power flicker.
- Listen. A hum with no drum movement points at belt, coupling, or transmission. Total silence points at the lid switch, door lock, or board.
Stop and call if you smell burning, hear grinding, see water on the floor, or the breaker trips. Do not force a locked door and do not bypass a safety switch.
