Whirlpool Washer Repair in Colorado Springs
F21, uL, Sd and LD codes explained, plus how to reset and recalibrate the machine before you pay anyone.

What Usually Fails on a Whirlpool
Whirlpool washers are among the most repairable machines on the market. Parts are widely available, the platform is shared with Maytag, and most faults come down to a handful of components rather than a sealed assembly you cannot get into.
The three we replace most: the drain pump, the lid switch or door lock, and on direct-drive top-loaders, the motor coupling. All three are affordable repairs on a machine worth keeping.
The one worth pausing on is the gearcase or tub bearing. On models with a sealed plastic outer tub, that repair usually costs more than the washer is worth.
Whirlpool Error Codes
| Code | Meaning | Usual cause |
|---|---|---|
| F21 / F9E1 | Draining too slowly | Clogged pump filter, blocked hose, failed pump |
| uL / Ofb | Off-balance load | Load distribution, unlevel machine, suspension rods |
| Sd / Sud | Excess suds | Non-HE detergent or too much of it |
| LD | Long drain | Same family as F21 |
| F5E2 | Door will not lock | Door lock assembly or wiring |
| F7E1 | Motor cannot reach speed | Motor, coupling, or drive belt |
| dU | Door unlock fault | Lock assembly stuck |
| F8E1 / LF | Long fill | Supply valve, kinked hose, inlet valve |

How to Reset a Whirlpool Washer
A reset clears the control board memory and clears a stuck error state. It is free, takes three minutes, and resolves a good share of faults that follow a power flicker.
- Unplug the washer for three minutes. Not thirty seconds. The board needs time to fully discharge.
- Plug it back in and open and close the lid or door six times within about twelve seconds. On many Whirlpool models this signals the board to clear its stored state.
- Run a short cycle to confirm.
When a reset will not help
A reset moves no coins and repairs no seals. If you see water on the floor, smell burning, hear grinding, or the breaker trips, call instead. And if you find yourself resetting weekly, the board, the power supply, or a sensor is genuinely failing.
How to Recalibrate a Whirlpool Washer
Calibration re-teaches the machine the weight of its own empty drum. Newer top-loaders use that baseline to sense load size and balance. When it drifts, you get repeated uL codes, overfilling, underfilling, or cycles that take far longer than they should.
It is worth running after the machine has been moved, after a control board replacement, or when off-balance errors appear on loads that are clearly balanced.
- Empty the drum completely and close the lid.
- Confirm the machine is level. Rock it corner to corner and adjust the feet until it does not move. Calibrating an unlevel machine bakes in the error.
- Enter the calibration routine for your model. The sequence differs across Cabrio, Duet, and current top-load and front-load lines, so use the sequence printed on your tech sheet.
- Let it run uninterrupted. The drum will rotate in both directions for several minutes. Do not open the lid.
- Run a normal cycle with a balanced load to confirm.
One honest caution. The button sequence to enter calibration is model-specific, and the wrong sequence can put the machine into a diagnostic mode you did not want. Your tech sheet is usually tucked inside the console or behind the lower panel. If you cannot find it, give us the model number and we will tell you the correct sequence over the phone at no charge.
Common Whirlpool Problems
Will not drain
F21 is the code. Filter, hose, then pump, in that order. Full walkthrough on our drain page.
Will not spin
On direct-drive top-loaders the motor coupling is the classic failure — the motor runs, the drum does not. On others it is the lid switch refusing to confirm the lid is down. See washer not spinning.
Banging and walking on spin
Suspension rods on top-loaders stretch and lose damping. Shock absorbers do the same on front-loaders. If the machine also shows uL on balanced loads, calibration is worth running first.
Sd or Sud code
Almost always detergent. Regular detergent in a high-efficiency Whirlpool creates a foam head that the machine reads as an overload. Switch to HE, use less than you think, and run two rinse cycles. Costs nothing.
Leaking
Door boot seal on front-loaders, supply hose fittings on both. Check the hose connections before assuming the worst.
Repair Costs
| Repair | Typical total |
|---|---|
| Drain pump | $180 to $320 |
| Lid switch or door lock | $175 to $295 |
| Motor coupling | $165 to $275 |
| Drive belt | $165 to $250 |
| Water inlet valve | $165 to $280 |
| Suspension rods or shocks | $210 to $360 |
| Shift actuator | $195 to $330 |
| Main control board | $290 to $520 |
| Gearcase or tub bearing | $400 to $650 — usually replace instead |
Is a Whirlpool worth repairing?
More often than most brands, yes. Parts availability is good and the common failures are cheap. The line to watch is the gearcase — once that goes on a ten-year-old machine, the quote crosses half the cost of a replacement and the honest answer changes. See when we recommend replacement.
Local Factors
After a move
Whirlpool front-loaders ship with transit bolts through the back panel that lock the drum. Left in after a PCS move to Fort Carson, Peterson, Schriever, or the Academy, the machine bangs hard on every spin. Recalibrating after a move is worth doing too, since the drum baseline shifts with transport.
Storm season
At 6,035 feet against the Front Range, summer afternoons bring fast storms and power flickers. Control boards go erratic rather than failing outright. A surge protector on the laundry circuit costs far less than a board.
Winter and unheated spaces
Colorado Springs averages around 64 inches of snow a year. Water left in the inlet valve or pump housing can freeze and split. Shut the supply valves and drain the hoses before the first hard freeze.
Whirlpool Washer Questions
What does F21 mean on a Whirlpool washer?
The machine tried to drain and could not finish in the expected time. Check the drain pump filter first, then the hose for a kink, then the pump itself. It is the most common Whirlpool code we see.
How do I reset a Whirlpool washer?
Unplug it for three minutes, plug it back in, then open and close the lid six times within about twelve seconds. Run a short cycle to confirm. If you have to do this weekly, something is failing.
How do I recalibrate my Whirlpool washer?
Empty the drum, confirm the machine is level, then run the calibration routine for your model using the sequence on your tech sheet. It re-teaches the machine its empty-drum weight and usually clears repeated uL codes.
What does uL mean?
Unbalanced load. Start by redistributing the washing, since comforters, wet denim, and towels bunch to one side. If it appears on clearly balanced loads, run calibration, then check the suspension rods.
What does Sd or Sud mean?
Too many suds. It is nearly always regular detergent in a high-efficiency machine. Switch to HE detergent, use less, and run two rinse cycles.
Are Whirlpool washers reliable?
They are among the more repairable machines on the market. Parts are available, the common failures are affordable, and the platform is shared with Maytag. The expensive exception is the gearcase.
Do you repair Whirlpool and Maytag?
Both, plus Samsung, LG, GE, Speed Queen, Kenmore, Bosch, Frigidaire, and Electrolux. See all brands we serve.
Do you carry Whirlpool parts?
We carry the common failures — pumps, lid switches, couplings, belts. Boards and gearcases are model-specific and may take a day or two.
