Maytag Washer Repair in Colorado Springs
uL, Sd and F5E2 codes explained, plus why Maytag and Whirlpool parts are usually easy to get.

What Usually Fails on a Maytag
Maytag and Whirlpool share a parts platform, which is good news for owners. Diagnosis is well documented, parts are widely available, and most faults come down to a handful of components rather than a sealed assembly.
The three we replace most on Maytag: the drain pump, the lid switch or door lock, and on top-loaders, the suspension rods. Bravos and Centennial models in particular are known for off-balance complaints as the rods stretch.
The expensive exception is the gearcase. Once that goes on an older machine, the quote usually crosses half the price of a replacement.
Maytag Error Codes
| Code | Meaning | Usual cause |
|---|---|---|
| uL / Ofb | Off-balance load | Load distribution, unlevel machine, suspension rods |
| F21 / LD | Long drain | Clogged filter, blocked hose, failed pump |
| Sd / Sud | Excess suds | Non-HE detergent or too much of it |
| F5E2 | Door will not lock | Door lock assembly or wiring |
| F7E1 | Motor cannot reach speed | Motor, coupling or drive belt |
| F8E1 / LF | Long fill | Supply valve, kinked hose, inlet valve |
| Sense light flashing | Load sensing failure | Often resolved by recalibration |
Seeing uL repeatedly on balanced loads? Try recalibrating the machine before replacing anything — the procedure is on our Whirlpool calibration guide, which applies to the shared platform.
Common Maytag Problems
Off-balance and the Sense light
The signature Maytag complaint. Bravos and Centennial top-loaders use load sensing that drifts over time. Recalibration often clears it. If it returns, the suspension rods have stretched and need replacing as a set of four. See washer shaking and banging.
Will not drain
F21 or LD. Filter, then hose, then pump, in that order. Full walkthrough on our drain page.
Will not spin
Lid switch on top-loaders, door lock on front-loaders, or a failed shift actuator on newer top-load models. See washer not spinning.
Sd or Sud
Almost always detergent rather than a fault. Switch to HE, use less, run two rinses.
Maytag Repair Costs
| Repair | Typical total |
|---|---|
| Drain pump | $180 to $320 |
| Lid switch or door lock | $175 to $295 |
| Suspension rods (set of four) | $210 to $360 |
| Shift actuator | $195 to $330 |
| Drive belt or coupling | $165 to $275 |
| Water inlet valve | $165 to $280 |
| Main control board | $290 to $520 |
| Gearcase or tub bearing | $400 to $650 — usually replace instead |
Is a Maytag worth repairing?
More often than most brands, yes. The shared Whirlpool platform means parts are available and affordable, and the common failures are all reasonable repairs. The line to watch is the gearcase — past that point on a machine over eight years old, replacement makes more sense. See when we recommend replacement.
Local Factors
After a move
Front-loaders ship with transit bolts through the back panel that lock the drum. Left in after a PCS move to Fort Carson, Peterson, Schriever or the Academy, the machine bangs hard on every spin. See washer shaking and banging.
Storm season
At 6,035 feet against the Front Range, summer afternoons bring fast storms and power flickers. Control boards rarely fail outright — they go erratic. A surge protector on the laundry circuit costs far less than a board.
Unheated garages
Colorado Springs averages around 64 inches of snow a year. Water left in the inlet valve or pump housing can freeze and split. Shut the supply valves and drain the fill hoses before the first hard freeze.
Maytag Washer Questions
What does uL mean on a Maytag washer?
Unbalanced load. Redistribute the washing first, since comforters, denim and towels bunch to one side. If it appears on clearly balanced loads, recalibrate the machine, then check the suspension rods.
Why does my Maytag Sense light keep flashing?
The load-sensing routine is failing to settle. Recalibration clears it in most cases. If it returns within weeks, the suspension rods have stretched and need replacing as a set.
Are Maytag and Whirlpool the same?
They share a parts platform, which is why diagnosis and parts availability are similar. It works in your favour — parts are common and technicians know the machines well.
What does F21 mean?
The machine tried to drain and could not finish in time. Start with the drain pump filter, then the hose, then the pump. Full detail on our drain page.
How do I reset a Maytag washer?
Unplug for three minutes, plug back in, then open and close the lid six times within about twelve seconds on most top-load models. If you have to repeat it weekly, something is failing.
Are Maytag washers reliable?
They are among the more repairable machines on the market. The common failures are affordable and parts are easy to source. Suspension rods on top-load models are the most frequent complaint.
Do you carry Maytag parts?
We carry the common failures — pumps, lid switches, belts, actuators. Boards and gearcases are model-specific and may take a day or two.
